Industrial Chip Applications: Control, Sensing and Reliable Power

· Application insights

Industrial automation depends on more than a processor. Measurement, communication, isolation and power electronics connect digital control to a physical machine. Each block brings its own component selection and sourcing requirements.

Control and measurement in PLC systems

A programmable logic controller receives field signals, processes them and sends outputs. Analog input paths may combine protection, signal conditioning, amplification, filtering and analog-to-digital conversion. The required accuracy depends on the complete signal chain, not only an ADC's resolution.

Output circuits and communication interfaces have different electrical demands. Component choices should follow the actual sensor, actuator and network requirements, with engineering review of operating ranges and fault conditions.

Isolation separates electrical domains

Industrial interfaces can require galvanic isolation between field wiring and controller electronics. Digital isolators, isolated interfaces and isolated power functions help implement these boundaries. The needed isolation rating and architecture must be derived from the system requirements and applicable standards.

Isolation is not established merely by placing an isolator on a board: power distribution, PCB spacing and the complete design still need to be verified.

Motor drives connect control to motion

Motor-drive electronics combine processing, current and voltage sensing, gate drivers and power switching devices. Analog Devices describes how industrial motion-control signal chains vary with sensor choice, isolation requirements, conversion and power partitioning.

Thermal performance, electrical noise and protection should be assessed in the finished equipment. A component rated for one condition may not meet every duty cycle or installation environment.

Plan for reliable sourcing

  • Keep exact part numbers, packages and required temperature grades in the BOM.
  • Record interface, supply-voltage and isolation requirements.
  • Check manufacturer lifecycle notices and qualification documentation.
  • Review proposed substitutions for hardware, firmware and compliance impacts.

For production or maintenance enquiries, include quantities and the delivery schedule. Availability and suitability must be confirmed for the specific requirement.
